Abnormal Bleeding
The Abnormal Bleeding DTU provides care to women with any disorder of menstrual function. Whilst the obvious problems of heavy periods and frequent periods are well recognised, the DTU has also gained a reputation for dealing with the anatomical causes of amenorrhea, particularly Asherman’s syndrome. The unit has described a revolutionary technique to treat women with infertility secondary to this problem (dense intrauterine adhesions). A greater number of these procedures are being performed at the unit with considerable success in reopening the cavity and allowing the opportunity for pregnancy to occur. Unexplained bleeding outside of the normal menstrual cycle is an extremely common condition. Fibroids and polyps are some of the problems associated with abnormal bleeding. We are able to use ultrasound, and minimally invasive surgery to treat this problem. Special hysteroscopy sessions are allocated within this DTU to fully assess anatomical abnormality and if possible treat the problem in the same setting. This service allows women to have rapid diagnosis of common and distressing problems in a same-day consultation and investigation. Further treatment such as medical management or surgery can be discussed with much greater certainty for both patient and doctor. Endo-Gynaecology has also developed an advanced technique to "open up" and clear the uterus of women suffering from intra-uterine adhesions.
