Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain
Endometriosis is by far the most common cause of pelvic pain with possibly one in five women affected by the condition. Women are usually referred to Endo-Gynaecology by their doctor due to unexplained pelvic pain and many have already had several previous surgeries. Endo-Gynaecology is considered expert in diagnosing and treating the various causes of pelvic pain. More than 300 women a year are treated for pelvic pain with more than 70 per cent significantly improved after treatment. We offer the very latest techniques in advanced key-hole surgery for endometriosis. In addition, we combine surgical and medical treatments with physiotherapy. Many women with severe pelvic pain tend to permanently contract their pelvic floor muscles. This in turn leads to additional pain. Physiotherapy helps to teach women how to relax their pelvic floor muscles to help achieve pain relief. We are also investigating the use of Botox® injections to relax the pelvic floor muscles in women with persisting chronic pelvic pain. Psychology, Health Problems and Chronic Pain Living with a chronic medical condition and/or chronic pain can have a marked impact on all aspects of life and daily functioning. Pain, anxiety and depression often go hand in hand. Many women with chronic pelvic pain experience anxiety and/or a roller-coaster ride of emotions, with mood swings and irritability. Lack of understanding or support from partners, family, friends and work colleagues can also impact on mood. At times, pain and/or fatigue can limit what women with pelvic pain can do, restricting leisure activities, limiting the time for work or study, stopping or restricting sexual activity and reducing independence. Chronic pain can also lead to financial problems due to limiting the hours worked or having to take time off work due to pain, or the numerous medical appointments and investigations associated with the condition. A Clinical Psychologist who specialises in pain management can help by teaching specific strategies that have been found to be helpful in coping with chronic pain, as well as teaching strategies to manage associated problems such as the impact on relationships, stress, anxiety and mood swings. Maureen Frilingos believes in a collaborative approach and aims to work with her clients and team members helping to develop an understanding of how problems develop and to function better by equipping patients with the knowledge and skills to manage their problems better.
